SENIORS -

Cwmbran RFC 20 v 21 Caldicot RFC

When is a home game not a home game.

A very strange occurrence considering the seniors rugby season is regularly extended into May, but due to a double booking at the Kings Head, the Seniors were left with no option other than to play the game away on the Girling’s RFC pitch.

Match Report
Colin Tuckwell Bowl - Semi Final
Thank you to Girling’s RFC for letting use their facilities and also the supporters who tried to make it feel like a home game.
Having beaten Caldicot home and away in the league the Crows were looking to make it three from three in the Colin Tuckwell Bowl semi-final, with several players unavailable we had the opportunity to pick a few players coming back from injury, this was great news, speaking volumes about the depth of squad we currently have.

In the first half Caldicot came out of the blocks and took us by surprise, we were unable to play to our game plan as we were drawn in to a forward’s battle, Caldicot quickly going ahead 0 - 6 with two penalties before Mikey Davies put a penalty over for Cwmbran to make it 3 - 6 after 19 minutes.

Caldicot responded quickly with a two tries to go ahead 3 - 18.

As the first half drew to a close, Cwmbran upped the tempo and with the increased possession and some positive ball carrying we started to put pressure the Caldicot defence, striking back just before half time with an unconverted try 8 - 18.

Half Time Cwmbran RFC 8 - 18 Caldicot RFC

Cwmbran started the second half with the same high tempo they finished the first and scored quickly to make it 13 - 18, the team now back in contention and full of belief that they could win the game, Caldicot now clearly tiring, took every opportunity to slow the game down maybe even used a few forgotten dark arts.

Although Cwmbran spent the majority of the second half camped out in the Caldicot end of the field they wasted a number of opportunities to take the lead, then three minutes from time they has a line out five metres from the Caldicot try line, a catch and drive brought down by the defence, the referee awarded a penalty try, Cwmbran for the first time in front leading 20 - 18.

With everyone waiting for the referee to blow for time, Caldicot managed to get a penalty thirty metres out on the right wing which they put through the uprights to retake the lead and a final score of 20 - 21.

"Although very disappointed with the result, we are a young squad and as we grow and develop, we will continue to challenge teams as this level and above".
